What is Global Studies & Human Geography?
Broadly speaking, Global Studies & Human Geography are both fields that explore the global community – from people, cultures, and countries, to globalization, politics, language, and much more. It looks at the composition of the world and communities, the issues within our societies, and how to improve upon them.
When you major in Global Studies, there are two concentrations to choose from: Global Studies or Human Geography.
Global Studies concentration is designed for students who wish to explore the world’s peoples, cultures, and countries while developing the skills needed to work and thrive in the modern world. The focus is on how globalization is changing societies, their cultures and attitudes, politics, and economics. The effects of rapid globalization are reshaping most fields, from health care to business and logistics, from music to food security.
Global Studies prepare students to succeed in this changing world. You will be required to study abroad at least once and will develop a regional area of expertise and may choose many of your courses from various MTSU departments. Our faculty have extensive experience living and working abroad and enjoy taking students on faculty-led study abroad trips, such as Dr. Francis Koti’s Summer 2025 Tanzania course (link opens a flyer). This is a flexible degree you can craft to reflect your passions and interests.

Human Geography concentration is designed for students who want to understand the world and its cultures with an emphasis on spatial distribution of human and physical systems, patterns, interactions, etc. What does that mean in practice? You will learn how to use technology such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, Global Positioning Systems, and cartography to study and connect your classroom materials to tangible scenarios.
Read below to see examples, such as Dr. Christabel Devadoss and her Multimedia Research in Cultural Geography course or how she often integrates video games into her lessons.
